Background: The Battle for Change Over a Decade

In Bangladesh, the age limit to join into the government job has remained 30 for more than ten years while 32 for some quota holders. Many times, protests led by organizations like the Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad called for increasing the entry age to 35. They showed a variety of reasons. Such as the lengthening time needed for higher education and the delayed entry into the labor market.

In 2024, students and activists organized rallies throughout the capital city of Dhaka, giving the campaign fresh impetus. As protesters gathered for reform, they blocked major intersections on many occasions, creating heavy traffic on the road. Their point was straightforward. The students frequently experience major delays in finishing their education.

Argument for Increasing Job Entry Age Limit

1. Delays in Education: The students face delay in finishing their education is a common justification for calls to raise the job entry age into government job. Session jams (academic delays caused by institutional inefficiencies) reduces from the past. But many students still need more time in order to complete their university degrees. Additionally, by the time they are thirty, students pursuing additional degrees—such as master’s and doctoral degrees—frequently face difficulties for applying for jobs. So the authority should consider these delays and allow the maximum job entry age limit to 35. Then the graduates will get additional time to start looking for work.

2. Economic Factors: Although Bangladesh’s economy has grown significantly in the past ten years, there are still issues, particularly for young people looking for work. Many young people especially in rural areas face additional financial difficulties when trying to finish their education. By the time they are prepared to join the workforce, they might have already approached the current 30-year-old age restriction. So, if if the authority increase the age limit, more eligible candidates can apply for jobs in the public sector. Who might not otherwise be able to because of age restriction.

3. Global Comparison: Bangladesh’s government job entry age is lower than that of many other countries. Such as our neighboring countries including India and Pakistan has allow the maximum age limit for entry into government job for general candidates at between 35 and 37.

4. Gender Considerations: Women are granted a separate provision in the proposal to raise the employment entrance age. This enabling them to apply until they become 37.  Because women face various challenges in balancing family life, education and other issues.

Argument Against Increasing Job Entry Age

1. Increased Competition: If the authority increase the job entry age limit, it will directly impacts on the on the competition for the government job. Since there are a lot more qualified applicants, this can lead to more competitive tests. The government has to increase its capability to handle and process the examination of more candidates.

2. Pressure on the Private Sector: Raising the job entry age limit could have an impact on the private sector as well. Many graduates may now have to wait longer to apply for government jobs. Even though they may have previously thought about working in the private sector.
